Congregation B'nai Israel Reads The New Jim Crow


Following the congregational reading and discussions of Michelle Alexander’s The New Jim Crow, the Racial Justice Committee will host two guest speakers.

What the New Jim Crow Looks Like Today in Sacramento 

Sunday, December 9, Sacramento Civil Rights Attorney Keith Staten will follow up on the congregation’s discussions with current and local examples of the dynamics described in Alexander’s book. Read bio HERE

From Understanding to Action: Taking It to the Next Level
Sunday, January 6, Pastor Joy Johnson, President of Sacramento Area Congregations Together, will help congregants consider what actions—large and small, public and personal—we can take to change the system of oppression described by the author and our speakers. Read bio HERE

Both events will take place from 7:00 – 8:30 PM in the Harry M. Tonkin Memorial Chapel.
