Birth & Baby
Births and Namings
Names? Mohel? Before your baby is born, you may discuss the choice of Hebrew names, the Brit Milah (circumcision) ceremony for boys or the Brit Bat (naming) ceremony for girls, and any other questions with our rabbi or cantor.
If you are a member and would like to share the news of a new addition to the family, please complete this form so we can celebrate with you!
Our clergy will be there to help you and your family celebrate these ceremonies and to welcome your new child into the Jewish people. For more information, please contact the Clergy Assistant.
Names, Gender Identity, and Inclusion
Our Commitment to Inclusive Naming Practices
As a Reform Jewish community, we affirm the inherent dignity and divine image (b’tzelem Elohim) in every person. This includes honoring each individual’s self-understanding of their name, gender identity, and pronouns.
Affirming Names & Identities at Our Temple
In our community, a name is sacred. It reflects who we are, how we understand ourselves, and the story we choose to carry forward. We know that for many transgender, nonbinary, and gender-expansive Jews — as well as for anyone seeking a new beginning — a chosen name can be a powerful step toward wholeness.
Your Name, Your Journey
We honor each person’s right to be known by the name and pronouns that reflect their truest self. Whether you are embracing a new name, returning to an old one, or exploring possibilities, you are welcome here exactly as you are.
All personal information shared with clergy or staff — including prior names — is confidential. We do not disclose a person’s history, identity journey, or previous names without their explicit consent.
Hebrew Names & Renaming Rituals
Jewish tradition teaches that names hold spiritual meaning. Our clergy are available to work with you to:
- Select a new Hebrew or English name
- Reinterpret or adapt an existing Hebrew name
- Create a brit shem (naming covenant) or renaming ceremony
- Mark a transition or affirmation with blessings rooted in Reform practice
We approach this process with respect, sensitivity, and deep joy. Your story and comfort guide every step.
A Community of Care
Congregation B’nai Israel is committed to full inclusion. We seek to ensure that prayer, ritual, educational programs, and communal language reflect our commitment to gender diversity and human dignity. This includes continued review of programs, forms, signage, and communication to uphold inclusive practice.
In all things, we strive to create a community where every person is embraced fully, and where each individual’s name and identity are honored as part of the sacred tapestry of Jewish life.
If you are considering a new name or would like guidance, please reach out. It is our honor to walk with you as you write the next chapter of your Jewish life.
